PILATES CLASSES
Joseph Pilates: Founder
Pilates is an exercise technique that was first devised by a man named Joseph Pilates. Joseph Pilates was born in 1880 as a German Nationalist His father was a Greek gymnast and his mother was a German naturopath. As a child, Joseph was small, frail and sickly. He was bullied by the older boys at school. Because of this he devoted his life to physically strengthening his body and teaching others to do the same.
When he introduced his techniques to America in 1910, it was called Contrology. It became quite popular among dancers and artists, who needed agility and grace in their movements without building bulky muscles. His methods focus on the core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine, which of course controls the body's nervous system.
The exercise program grew and was favored by generally everyone who wanted a low intensity workout.
Pilates
Some people believe that a Pilateswork out will include the best stomach exercises. This is because in a Pilates work out, the main focus is on the core of the whole body, which is near the spine and the lower pelvis, which in essence is the abdominal, or stomach muscles.
Every movement in a Pilate's workout, is geared towards a whole body exercise system that is not just tightening your stomach muscles. It is meant to be beneficial for your whole being, However, the workouts do affect the stomach muscles either directly or indirectly, as the focus is on the whole body core center.
The main thing to consider, when considering the Pilates system is the trainer and the cost.
The Benefits of a Pilates Class

The body’s core, is one of the main focuses of a Pilates class. The core muscles of your body, which include the abdominal, or stomach muscles, the lower back, the hips and the buttox which are all near the spine and the lower pelvis area. They control the body's movements, keep the body balanced and in alignment, which also controls the nervous system.
Pilates and Pilates classes have been practicing for over 90 years since its introduction in the 1910’s and the benefits have been manifesting themselves since then. Here are a few of the benefits you’ll get when you take a Pilates class.
Improvement in Flexibility
In this world of technology more and more people have become married to their computer screens or video screens. People seldom leave their cubicles to get up and stretch. They eat at their desk and some will even sleep at there desk. We are becoming a society of technoslugs instead of couch potatoes. Your muscles are becoming atrophied because of lack of use.
Moving around and stretching is essential to keeping your bodies toned and flexible. Participating in a Pilates class will greatly improve your agility and you will learn to move with fluidity and grace through the stretching exercises. Graceful movements are emphasized instead of the rapid, high energy of an aerobics class and total focus is essential.
Pilates classes, unlike Yoga, improve your mobility and makes moving from one position to another a fluid, graceful movement, not unlike the ballet or a waltz. Working the various muscle groups together in a continuous, fluid motion, trains the muscles to make the movement patterns smother, and less strenuous. These smoother, fluid movements assist in avoiding injuries and improve the posture.
Pilates for Back and Joint Pain Relief

The majority of the time, most people will only engage in exercises that focus on certain muscles. For example, tightening the stomach muscles or abs. This causes the area that is being worked on to be out of balance with the rest of the body. Pilate exercises incorporate the whole body and is able to correct all of the imbalances that the individual body may have.
The core muscle groups, which include the pelvis, abdomen, lower back and buttocks, are being exercised in order to bring the body back into alignment. This brings balance and symmetry back into the body, allowing the body to heal itself because it is functioning properly. The muscles become elasticized and strengthen at the same time which greatly improves back pain and joint pain.
Pilate exercise can be performed without feeling pain and stiffness later. People usually feet more energized after the classes.
Stress Reduction
Improved Circulation
Another benefit of the breathing exercises that are taught in a Pilates Class is the improvement of your body's circulation. Blood vessels are opened and the blood supply has a better capability of getting nutrients throughout the body and increasing the flow to the brain. Once circulation has improved, toxins are then released and the mind will noticeably become more alert as the brain begins it's cellular repair. Again this is very similar to Yoga but much more intense.
Disadvantages of a Pilates Class
The classes are very pricey.
Pilates instructors go through intense, rigorous and expensive training before being able to pass their training onto their own classes of students. They also have the studio overhead and the cost of the equipment which is passed onto the consumer.
Incorrect muscle development may also occur when Pilates are taught by an unqualified instructor or practiced at home without supervision and equipment. It is important to use a mirror to see how your own movements compare to the home video you may be using.
